Californian Artist Shag made his name with sophisticated paintings of civilised hedonism from a bygone era - typically 1960’s dollybirds and lounge lizards in turtlenecks, quaffing cocktails in chic drinking dens. But his paintings are more than just straightforward retro. His soigné characters consort with men with Egyptian sphinx’s heads and Picasso-inspired Minotaurs deliberately echoing the way 60’s graphic designers referenced the Modernist master.
